How gift planning turns gratitude into greater impact

Gift planning takes intention. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Andy and Sally Langford worked with the Foundation to do more for a cherished cause.

A few years into their retirement from active ministry, Revs. Sally and Andy Langford sat down to review their financial plans, investments, and giving.

Stewardship is at the heart of Langfords’ identity as United Methodists. Andy spent 45 years in ordained ministry, culminating in a 15-year appointment at Central UMC in Concord. Sally pastored local churches in addition to serving as a District Superintendent and Assistant to the Bishop.

A conversation with A.J. Thomas, the Foundation’s Director of Client Relations, revealed that a Donor Advised Fund would be an ideal way for the couple to strengthen their support for cherished causes.

Among the advantages: Reduced tax liability, less paperwork, and, most importantly, greater giving power.

Supporting a cherished ministry

The Langfords are passionate about the organization formerly known as UMAR. In 2023, UMAR became part of Monarch, an Albemarle-based nonprofit serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Group homes, arts-based day programs, and vocational resources founded under the UMAR name continue to enrich lives across Western North Carolina.

The Aldersgate campus of Monarch provides daily care for a cousin of the Langfords.

“We have been so thankful for the staff, residents, and donors who make this ministry happen,” Andy said.

UMAR leaders say charitable contributions are increasingly critical to help offset federal funding cuts. For the Langfords, it was about returning thanks for the blessings of God’s abundance.

“We strongly recommend people speak with the Foundation,” Andy said, “and consider a Donor Advised Fund for yourself.”
